Celebration Event for the Creation of Naju Yeongsanpo Honggeo Street
Jeonnam Province announced on June 5 that the number of Namdo food streets, which have been promoted as premium destinations since 2016, has surpassed 20.
The selected Namdo food streets include: Mokpo Pyeonghwa Plaza Taste Street, Yeosu Marine Park Samhap Street, Suncheon Ujang Gukbap, Naju Yeongsanpo Honggeo, Gwangyang Bulgogi and Seomjingang Mangdeok Port Sashimi Street, Damyang Changpyeong Gukbap, Gokseong Amnok Crab and Sweetfish, Goheung Nokdong Eel, Boseong Beolgyo Cockle, Jangheung Clam and Pen Shell, Gangjin Byeongyeong Pork Bulgogi and Maryang Mihang Sashimi Street, Haenam Chicken Course, Muan Mud Octopus, Yeonggwang Beopseongpo Dried Yellow Corvina, Jangseong Eel, Wando Abalone, Shinan Island Mud Octopus, Naju Yeongsanpo Honggeo Street, Hampyeongcheonji Taste Street, and Jindo Seochon Skate Street, totaling 21 locations.
Among these, Naju Yeongsanpo Honggeo Street, which was selected as the 19th Namdo food street in 2023, has completed its development and begun operations. On June 5, Jeonnam Province and Naju City officials, provincial and city council members, the Honggeo Association, and about 100 citizens attended a celebratory event for Yeongsanpo Honggeo Street, the home of the 600-year-old tradition of aged Honggeo.
Yeongsanpo Honggeo Street has been newly created as a creative destination that reflects unique stories that can only be seen and heard here, making it a place people will want to revisit.
Hampyeongcheonji Taste Street and Jindo Seochon Skate Street, which were selected as the 20th and 21st Namdo food streets last year, are currently under development.
For each location selected as a Namdo food street, Jeonnam Province is investing 1 billion won per site (500 million won from the province and 500 million won from the city or county) to carry out environmental improvement projects. These projects include design services, food street symbols, convenience facilities, sign improvements, walkway maintenance, rest areas, and securing parking lots, making it convenient for gourmet tourists to visit.
Additionally, various promotional activities are being carried out for the designated Namdo food streets and restaurants through websites and media outlets.
Lee Sangsim, Director of Health and Welfare at Jeonnam Province, said, "To brand Namdo food streets, we will create one food street per city or county, linking local specialties and culture to widely promote the clean and distinctive tastes and styles of Namdo. We also aim to support struggling self-employed business owners and revitalize the local economy amid economic downturns and weakened consumer sentiment."
In the second half of this year, Jeonnam Province plans to select two out of three areas?Gurye, Hwasun, and Yeongam?that have not yet been developed as Namdo food streets, through document reviews and on-site evaluations, and proceed with the projects.
