The two universities formed a consortium under the vision of "Establishing the Gyeonggi Northern W.I.N.G.S University Alliance to Drive Regional Innovation Based on the Aerospace and Defense Industry" (lead university: Korea Aerospace University; participating university: Daejin University). They applied for Type 2 (Regional Cluster Promotion Type), which is the most competitive among the three types of Gyeonggi-do RISE, and were finally selected as a RISE university after a document review and an in-person evaluation.
Through this, the two universities will secure a total project budget of 10 billion KRW over the next five years, and will design an innovation model for collaboration among universities, industry, local governments, and research institutes for the sustainable development of both the universities and the region. They will implement detailed initiatives in each area, including ▲training of professionals ▲research and development for regional industry value enhancement ▲establishment of a startup ecosystem ▲advancement of local alliances, among others.
Korea Aerospace University and Daejin University have established cooperative relationships with local governments in the region, including Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Donghwan) and Pocheon City (Mayor Baek Younghyeon), to formulate strategies for advanced industry-centered regional development. They have also prepared RISE project plans for regional development through collaboration with local industries, research institutes, and associations.
The two universities comprehensively analyzed alignment with regional development strategies, the needs of local industries, and the competitiveness of their specialized fields. As a result, Korea Aerospace University selected the aerospace sector, while Daejin University chose the defense drone and defense energy sectors (including materials, components, and equipment) as their strategic industries. Over the next five years, the two universities will pursue projects to discover and foster future growth engines for the northern Gyeonggi region through their collaboration.
A consortium representative stated, "Through the RISE university selection evaluation, it was confirmed that both universities possess the capabilities to serve as hub universities leading the growth of northern Gyeonggi, including talent development, technological research, entrepreneurship, and industry-academia-research collaboration." The representative added, "Going forward, the Korea Aerospace University-Daejin University consortium will make every effort to realize the RISE system by utilizing the universities' regional and industry-academia collaboration capabilities and fostering organic cooperation with local governments, industries, and related organizations. This will include nurturing local talent, promoting employment and entrepreneurship, and building an innovative ecosystem for sustainable regional development."
