Joint Inspection Teams Formed... Fines Ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 Won Imposed
On June 5, Jeonju City in North Jeolla Province announced that it will conduct intensive crackdowns on overnight parking of large commercial vehicles, such as cargo trucks and chartered buses, in residential areas.
This inspection has been launched to address the risks of traffic accidents, noise, and exhaust emissions caused by large vehicles illegally parked for extended periods on residential side streets.
The city plans to strengthen enforcement by organizing two joint inspection teams with a total of six members from the city and district offices. The crackdown targets commercial vehicles parked for more than one hour between midnight and 4 a.m. on side streets or other locations outside their registered garages.
If illegal overnight parking is detected, a fine will be imposed in accordance with the Passenger Transport Service Act. The fines are 200,000 won for general cargo trucks and chartered buses, 100,000 won for individual cargo vehicles, and 50,000 won for light cargo vehicles.
The city has decided to strengthen enforcement because illegal overnight parking of large vehicles on side streets can obstruct drivers' views, exposing pedestrians to the risk of traffic accidents. Additionally, noise generated in the early morning hours can disturb residents' sleep, causing various inconveniences in daily life.
To address these inconveniences and improve parking conditions for transport workers, the city has been officially operating the Jangdong Public Cargo Parking Lot since February. All 120 regular parking spaces have already been assigned, reflecting a high utilization rate.
In fact, the Jangdong Public Cargo Parking Lot is equipped not only with parking spaces for cargo trucks but also with a management building that includes various amenities such as a fitness room, lounge, and shower facilities, which has resulted in high satisfaction among transport workers.
The city plans to continue encouraging the use of public parking lots while simultaneously providing guidance and enforcement against overnight parking on major roads and in urban areas, thereby strengthening the management of illegal parking.
Furthermore, to meet the parking demand of cargo transport workers and to address the problem of illegal parking in residential areas of the city center over the long term, the city plans to establish an additional public cargo parking lot in the southeastern area. To this end, the city is currently searching for candidate sites.
Previously, as of the end of last month, the city had recorded a total of 389 enforcement cases (116 crackdowns and 273 warnings), continuing its consistent efforts to address illegal overnight parking of large commercial vehicles.
Choi Junbeom, Director of Public Transportation at the city, stated, "We will continue to expand public parking lots to reduce illegal overnight parking and improve conditions in the transportation industry," adding, "We will also strive to create a transportation environment that satisfies both transport workers and citizens."
