'Putin's Closest Aide' Russian Shoigu Meets Kim Jong Un to Discuss Ukraine and Korean Peninsula

Sergey Shoigu, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, discussed issues related to Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula with Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, in Pyongyang on June 4 (local time).

According to RIA Novosti, citing the Russian Embassy in North Korea's Telegram channel, Secretary Shoigu was received by Chairman Kim, and the talks were held in a friendly and mutually understanding atmosphere.


Secretary Shoigu and Chairman Kim discussed cooperation in various fields and exchanged views on the crisis in Ukraine and the situation surrounding the Korean Peninsula.


This visit to North Korea took place on the day of President Lee Jaemyung's inauguration, leading to expectations that future inter-Korean relations and the outlook for the situation on the Korean Peninsula were discussed.


The Russian Embassy in North Korea stated that Secretary Shoigu visited North Korea for a "short working visit" and returned to Russia immediately afterward.


Secretary Shoigu, a close aide to President Vladimir Putin, visited North Korea on March 21 and delivered a personal letter from President Putin to Chairman Kim. He returned to Pyongyang two months later.
