Gwanak-gu Takes Preemptive Action Against Flooding... Expands Starlit Stream Cross-Section

Widening 1.6km Section of Stream
Lowers Water Level by Up to 0.76 Meters

Gwanak-gu in Seoul announced on June 4 that it has completed the project to expand the cross-sectional area of the Starlit Stream, taking preemptive measures to respond to recent abnormal weather events and heavy rainfall.

This project was carried out to address the geographical vulnerability of the Starlit Stream, where the risk of flooding was high due to the steep slopes of Gwanak Mountain, resulting in a short runoff time during heavy rain.

The expansion work was conducted over a 1.6-kilometer section from Dongbang 1 Bridge to Seungri Bridge. The newly constructed Sinbon Bridge, which had been demolished at the end of last year, was rebuilt at the end of May, completing all drainage improvement measures. According to the district office, the project has lowered the water level of the Starlit Stream by a minimum of 0.13 meters and a maximum of 0.76 meters, which is expected to help prevent flooding.

Additionally, last year, eight drop structures within the section, whose functionality had declined, were refurbished to moderate the slope. The Sinhwa Bridge, which was demolished in 2023, was also rebuilt at the end of May this year. In the curved section of the stream near Sinhwa Bridge, a transparent flood protection wall measuring 1.5 meters in height and 45 meters in length was newly installed, contributing to proactive flood response and the prevention of safety accidents for visitors by harmonizing with the stream's landscape.

Park Junhee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, stated, "Abnormal weather events and the resulting natural disasters are difficult to predict, but it is possible to prepare various measures to protect the safety and property of residents. With the completion of the Starlit Stream cross-sectional expansion project, we expect to further reduce flood and inundation damage by improving drainage capacity."
