Trump: "If We Do Nothing About Foreign Tariffs on the U.S., Survival Is Impossible"

President Donald Trump of the United States argued that the country cannot survive economically unless it responds to tariffs imposed by other nations with tariffs of its own.

On June 2 (local time), President Trump posted on the social networking service Truth Social, stating, "Other countries are imposing tariffs on us, and if we do not respond quickly with tariffs, there is absolutely no chance we can survive economically."

The previous day, President Trump posted a similar message on social media. He said, "If, contrary to expectations, the court rules against our tariffs, other countries will take us hostage with anti-American tariffs," adding, "This would mean the ruin of the American economy."

President Trump’s consecutive posts on social media defending the legitimacy of tariffs are interpreted as an attempt to pressure the U.S. judiciary, which is currently deliberating the effectiveness of reciprocal tariffs.

Previously, on May 28, the United States Court of International Trade (USCIT) ruled that the exclusive authority to impose tariffs belongs to Congress and ordered the repeal of the reciprocal tariffs implemented by President Trump.

The Trump administration appealed the decision, and the appellate court decided to stay the effect of the USCIT ruling.

The final decision on this case is expected to be made by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court currently has a 6-to-3 conservative majority among the justices.
