According to CNN and the Associated Press, former President Biden delivered a speech at a Memorial Day event held on the 30th (local time) at the Veterans Memorial Park near his home in Wilmington, Delaware. Memorial Day is observed on May 26.
This event coincided with the 10th anniversary of the death of former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, the eldest son of former President Biden, who died of a brain tumor. Former President Biden said, "Today marks the 10th anniversary since my son Beau passed away after spending a year in Iraq," adding, "To be honest, it is a hard day." He continued, "Being with you brings me some comfort. I am grateful to be able to grieve with you." He also urged, "Please remember the sacrifices of those who died in combat," and said, "I can still hear their voices."
After the event, former President Biden met with reporters and said, "We can overcome this disease (prostate cancer)," adding, "The prognosis is good. I am working hard on everything, and things are going well." He explained that his current treatment only involves taking a single pill, and after taking the medication for the next six weeks, he will begin another drug therapy. He emphasized, "(The cancer) has not spread to any organs, and my bones are strong, so (the cancer) has not invaded them." However, on May 18, a spokesperson for former President Biden stated that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and that cancer cells had metastasized to his bones.
On this day, when asked about ongoing controversy within the Democratic Party regarding his bid for re-election in last year's presidential race, former President Biden responded, "Why didn't they challenge me?" and asserted, "If I had run, I would have beaten them." He went on to say, "American politics has become too divided," and added, "Right now, we are at a truly difficult moment not only in American history but in world history. The decisions we make going forward will determine the next 20 years."
Since the disclosure of serious health issues such as his cancer diagnosis, former President Biden and his close aides have come under intense attack from the Donald Trump administration. The Trump administration claims that when former President Biden ran as the Democratic presidential candidate last year, his campaign was aware of his serious health problems but systematically concealed them.
