"Soot on His Hands Raised Suspicion"... Line 5 Arson Suspect Apprehended While Being Carried Out on Stretcher Yonhap News Agency

The suspect who set fire to a Seoul Subway Line 5 train was reportedly taken out on a stretcher and apprehended by police at the scene.


The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on May 31 that, regarding the arrest of the suspect?a man in his 60s identified as Mr. A?police noticed significant soot on his hands as he was being carried out on a stretcher to the Yeouinaru platform via the subway tracks after the incident. The police questioned him about the crime, and after the suspect admitted to the charges, he was arrested at approximately 9:45 a.m. as a flagrant offender.


Police discovered items at the scene, such as a lighter and a glass container, which are suspected to have been used in the crime, and are currently conducting forensic analysis. The investigation of the suspect is being handled by the Yeongdeungpo Police Station.


Mr. A is accused of setting a fire inside a Line 5 subway train traveling from Mapo Station to Yeouinaru Station at around 8:43 a.m. that day. The train operator and some passengers initially extinguished the flames with fire extinguishers at the scene, and the fire was completely put out by around 10 a.m.


Approximately 400 passengers evacuated through the tunnel, and among them, 21 people were transported to the hospital due to smoke inhalation and ankle fractures, among other injuries.
