The Korea Council for Investor Education held the "Challenge Money Quiz Show" for multicultural youth at the Ansan Global Youth Center on May 28. This event was the final session in a series of three programs planned with support from the Saeheumang Healing Fund, which is operated by the Credit Recovery Committee.
The Council designed the program to help youth with migrant backgrounds?who have had fewer opportunities for financial education due to language and cultural differences?more easily acquire practical financial knowledge and eventually grow into independent financial consumers in the domestic financial market. The program grouped participants by language, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Russian, and, with the assistance of interpreters, engaged them in team-based quiz shows and board games. These play-based educational activities were designed to increase the students' interest through cooperation within their language groups.
A Chinese-speaking youth who participated in the program said, "Through today's education, I realized that finance is closely related to everyday life and plays an important role for both individuals and companies."
Lee Seungmi, Director of the Ansan Global Youth Center, said, "There are concerns about whether youth who have immigrated to Korea with their parents will be able to manage economic activities and assets well when they become adults. Fortunately, I believe that through this education, they will gain much confidence to grow into proud financial consumers in our society."
Han Jaeyoung, President of the Korea Institute of Financial Investment Education (and Secretary General of the Council), said, "The Council is also providing a variety of outreach financial education programs for youth in rural and fishing communities, who have limited access to financial education opportunities. We hope that through this multicultural youth financial education program, youth with migrant backgrounds will overcome language and cultural barriers and enjoy equal financial opportunities."
