Korea Post to Issue Commemorative Stamps for 'World Environment Day'

On May 29, Korea Post Headquarters announced that it will issue commemorative stamps on June 5 to mark 'World Environment Day' and reflect on its significance.

The commemorative stamps will feature images that reinterpret traditional Korean landscape paintings in a modern style. By starkly contrasting pristine natural scenery with environments suffering from plastic pollution, the stamps aim to raise awareness about the urgency and importance of environmental protection.

A total of 528,000 commemorative stamps will be issued. They can be purchased at nearby main post offices or through the online post office.

'World Environment Day' was established at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972. Today, it has become the largest event in the environmental sector worldwide. Every year, the commemorative ceremony is attended by key figures from various countries, representatives of international organizations, and leaders of businesses and civic groups from around the world, who pledge the international community's joint efforts to address environmental issues.

On June 5, 1997, Korea successfully hosted the 28th World Environment Day commemorative ceremony in Seoul, demonstrating its commitment to environmental conservation to the international community. This year, after 28 years, the international event commemorating 'World Environment Day' will be held in Jeju Island.

The ceremony in Jeju will be held under the theme 'Ending Plastic Pollution.' It is expected to foster international consensus on the seriousness of plastic-related issues and reaffirm a shared commitment to finding solutions.

Cho Haekeun, head of Korea Post Headquarters, said, "We hope that the issuance of the commemorative stamps for World Environment Day will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of environmental protection and encourage everyone to join in meaningful actions to protect our blue planet."
