Gwangju City is moving forward in earnest with the construction of "G-SAFE (Gwangju Smart AI For Early-warning)," an AI-based city bus safety monitoring system designed to prevent city bus traffic accidents.
On May 27, Gwangju City held a "City Bus Safety Monitoring System G-SAFE Construction Service Kickoff Meeting" at the City Hall Happiness Conference Room. The meeting was attended by officials from Gwangju City, the Gwangju Bus Transportation Business Association, and representatives from local transportation companies. During the meeting, participants shared the project's direction and the system's key features.
The core objective of the "G-SAFE Construction Project" is to create a safer public transportation environment for citizens by shifting from a conventional post-incident traffic safety management system to a proactive, AI-based prevention system. The project focuses on preventing accidents caused by human factors such as sudden stops, speeding, and drowsy driving.
The main functions of the system include: ▲ real-time monitoring of vehicle locations and risky driving behaviors; ▲ analysis of sensor data from each vehicle and detection of risk factors; ▲ analysis of driver operation patterns such as speeding and sudden stops; ▲ maintenance guidance based on failure prediction; and ▲ automatic analysis and visualization of accident-prone areas using GPS data.
The city plans to begin full operation after installing and testing pilot devices in the second half of this year. In addition, Gwangju City intends to expand the use of G-SAFE in various fields, including the development of customized training materials for drivers, setting maintenance priorities, and establishing traffic accident prevention policies. Previously, in June 2023, the city signed a three-party agreement with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and the Gwangju Bus Transportation Association for the construction and operation of G-SAFE.
Kim Youngseon, Director of the Integrated Airport and Transportation Bureau, stated, "Public transportation is a core service directly linked to citizen safety. Through G-SAFE, we will realize a smart public transportation system that predicts and responds to accidents in advance."
