Governor Kim Taeheum of South Chungcheong Signs Letter of Intent for Sister City Cooperation with Jakarta, Indonesia

Kim Taeheum, Governor of South Chungcheong Province, who is currently visiting Indonesia to explore overseas markets, has formed a partnership with the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, the economic hub of Southeast Asia.

On the 27th, South Chungcheong Province announced that it had signed a "Letter of Intent on Establishing Sister City Cooperation" with Governor Pramono Anung at the Jakarta Special Capital Region Government Office.

The purpose of this letter of intent is to establish friendly relations between the two regions, pursue mutual benefits, and seek future-oriented cooperation initiatives.

Indonesia, with a population of approximately 280 million, is the world's fourth most populous country. More than 70% of its population is of working age, and it is recognized as the largest consumer market in Southeast Asia, based on its abundant resources and high economic growth rate.

In particular, Jakarta, the capital, has a population of 11.13 million and accounts for 17% of Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP), making it the core city for both the economy and administration.

As of 2023, Jakarta's gross regional domestic product (GRDP) was 225.9 billion dollars, its per capita GRDP was 21,166 dollars, and its economic growth rate stood at 4.96%.

With this sister city partnership, the province plans to actively promote exchanges with Jakarta in various fields, including policy, administration, culture, industry, exhibitions and events, and education.

The province also expects tangible economic benefits, such as enabling local companies to enter the Indonesian market and expand exports.

Governor Kim stated, "South Chungcheong is ranked second in national exports and third in GRDP among all regions in Korea, and is a core economic powerhouse of the country, with global companies such as Samsung and Hyundai investing in advanced industries." He added, "Since 2021, we have been pursuing practical cooperation through our overseas office established in Jakarta."

He continued, "There is an Indonesian proverb that says, 'The pinang has been split in two,' which means cooperation that benefits both sides. Just like this saying, I believe the signing of this letter of intent will serve as an opportunity to create strong synergy."

Governor Pramono Anung said, "South Chungcheong and Jakarta share a common vision of innovation and prosperity. This meeting will become a new milestone in the relationship between our two regions."

Meanwhile, Governor Pramono Anung drew attention by revealing himself as a self-proclaimed K-pop fan, saying, "I listen to BTS and BLACKPINK songs while driving."

Governor Kim presented Governor Anung with albums from the girl group HATSUHATSU, which includes a member from Bali, Indonesia, and the boy group ZEROBASEONE, which includes two members from Cheonan, as commemorative gifts.
