Vietnam’s Largest Telecom Operator ‘Viettel Telecom’
Development of AI Solutions Tailored to the Local Market
KT will establish an AI-dedicated data center (AIDC) and GPU farm in Vietnam. On May 27, KT announced that it had signed an AI transformation (AX) business partnership with the Vietnamese state-owned telecommunications group Viettel, worth a total of 130 billion KRW, and will work to expand Vietnam's AI infrastructure.
On May 26 (local time), KT announced that it had signed a strategic partnership agreement with Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and CEO of Viettel, at Viettel Group’s headquarters in Hanoi, Vietnam. Before the agreement, KT CEO Kim Youngsub met with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung and Vice Minister of Information and Communications Bui The Duy to discuss ways to accelerate Vietnam’s AI transformation.
Viettel Group is a global telecommunications and technology company that, centered on Viettel Telecom, Vietnam’s largest telecommunications provider, serves 138 million customers across 11 countries in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. As of last year, the company recorded sales of approximately 7.34 billion USD (about 10.44 trillion KRW) and is currently pursuing a transition from a traditional telecom operator to a technology company (TechCo).
Under this agreement, the two companies will cooperate in six key areas: AX consulting, AI business development, launching consumer and SME solutions, AI data center and cloud infrastructure, AX capabilities and global development centers, and joint market entry.
The core focus is a significant expansion of Vietnam’s AI infrastructure. The two companies will jointly build AI-dedicated data centers (AIDC) and GPU farms to greatly enhance Vietnam’s AI computing capabilities. At the same time, a Global Development Center (GDC) will be established in Hanoi to utilize local top IT talent for AX business, and KT’s AI education platform ‘AICE’ will be expanded nationwide in Vietnam to help foster AI experts.
AI solutions tailored to the Vietnamese market will also be developed. Based on its own AI technology, KT will develop a national AI model for Vietnam and a Vietnamese language-specialized AI agent, as well as create solutions to block voice phishing conducted in Vietnamese. Through these efforts, Viettel Group plans to introduce differentiated AI services for general consumers and SMEs in Vietnam.
The two companies also plan to promote AI transformation across the entire Southeast Asian region in the future by establishing a joint venture (JV).
