BNK Kyongnam Bank carried out ESG social contribution activities at the Bongam Mudflat, which is being revived as a sanctuary of life.
BNK Kyongnam Bank announced on the 25th that it had conducted a "Salicornia Community Restoration Volunteer Activity" at the Bongam Mudflat in Changwon.
Approximately 50 people participated in the Salicornia Community Restoration Volunteer Activity, including about 40 BNK Kyongnam Bank executives and employees and volunteers from the Masan Changwon Jinhae Environmental Movement Alliance.
Before beginning the main activities, the volunteers listened to an ecologist's explanation about the restoration of the Salicornia community and the ecosystem cycle.
Afterward, in accordance with low tide, the volunteers entered the area around the artificial island in the Bongam Mudflat and diligently planted Salicornia seedlings and seeds.
In particular, they planted 1,200 Salicornia seedlings, which are classified as annual plants, at 30-centimeter intervals and sowed 2 kilograms of seeds.
Choi Daesik, Head of the Social Contribution and Public Relations Department, said, "I am delighted as a member of the local community to see the Bongam Mudflat, once a symbol of marine environmental pollution, being revived in recent years. In order to create an even more vibrant Bongam Mudflat, we planned and carried out the Salicornia Community Restoration Volunteer Activity together with our executives and employees. I hope this will become a representative ESG social contribution activity that breathes new life into the Bongam Mudflat, the only remaining mudflat in Masan Bay."
The Salicornia planted by the volunteers, along with eelgrass and reeds, is a halophyte that plays an outstanding role in "conserving biodiversity and restoring blue carbon ecosystems for carbon reduction."
The Bongam Mudflat in Changwon is the nation's smallest coastal wetland designated as Wetland Protection Area No. 10, and serves as a habitat not only for halophytes but also for a variety of benthic animals and migratory birds.
