Russia launched a large-scale airstrike on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.


According to foreign media outlets such as the Associated Press on the 24th (local time), Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, stated that at least eight people were injured overnight due to Russia's drone and missile attacks. This Russian airstrike occurred just a few hours after the two countries began a prisoner exchange.


Reports said that explosions and machine-gun fire were heard throughout the city, fires broke out in buildings including apartment complexes, and citizens rushed to seek shelter in subway stations.

Timur Tkachchenko, the head of Kyiv's military and administrative authority, also reported that explosions and machine-gun fire were heard across the city, and debris from intercepted missiles and drones fell in at least four districts.


On May 16, Russia and Ukraine agreed during negotiations held in Istanbul, T?rkiye, to exchange 1,000 prisoners each. On this day, both countries exchanged 390 prisoners respectively. Both sides confirmed that this was the first phase of the prisoner exchange and that exchanges would continue over the next several days.


Ukraine has also continued drone strikes against Russia. On this day, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that overnight, there was an airstrike centered on the Belgorod region and that 94 drones were intercepted. In recent days, Ukraine has continued its attacks by launching a total of about 800 drones targeting Moscow and other parts of Russian territory.


As Ukrainian drones threatened Russia throughout the day, Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, stated the previous day that Russia would respond to such Ukrainian attacks.
