75 Construction Sites Including Drainage Systems
to Undergo Safety Inspections Until June 30
On May 23, Gwangju City announced that it will conduct a "joint public-private safety inspection" of local construction sites until June 30 to prevent safety accidents ahead of the upcoming rainy season.
The inspection will target 75 construction sites in the region (including road, apartment, and river construction projects) that are vulnerable to heavy rainfall and are carrying out excavation work. To ensure thorough inspections, Gwangju City will collaborate with the five district offices, the Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation, and private sector experts, as well as other related organizations.
The main inspection items include: ▲ establishment of safety measures and securing of flood control materials in preparation for the rainy season; ▲ inspection of risk factors for collapse and falls; ▲ measures such as maintenance of drainage systems and installation of plastic sheeting; ▲ identification of any abnormalities in earth retaining structures; and ▲ implementation of measures to prevent overturning of temporary fences and scaffolding in case of strong winds.
For minor issues that can be addressed on-site, immediate corrective action will be taken. For issues that are difficult to resolve on the spot, continuous follow-up management will be carried out until the risk factors are eliminated.
Bae Bokhwan, Director of the Citizens' Safety Office, stated, "As the frequency of extreme rainfall increases due to ongoing abnormal weather conditions, thorough preparation is essential. Through this safety inspection, we will do our utmost to identify and eliminate risk factors in advance and prevent safety accidents."
