Investing 35 Billion Won in R&D by 2029
Goheung County in South Jeolla Province (Governor Gong Youngmin) announced on May 23 that it was finally selected for the new national project contest, 'Sustainable High-Quality Seaweed Seed Production and Land-Based Aquaculture Technology Development,' organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
This national project aims to develop and commercialize land-based aquaculture technology that enables year-round mass production, in order to ensure food safety and stable supply of domestically farmed seaweed.

The project covers the entire process, from selecting high-quality seaweed varieties suitable for land-based aquaculture to establishing a system capable of year-round mass production. A total of 35 billion won will be invested in research and development over five years until 2029, with the goal of completing a fourth industrial revolution-style land-based seaweed aquaculture system.
Going forward, Goheung County plans to form a consortium with two metropolitan governments including North Jeolla Province and South Chungcheong Province, 12 university research institutes including Kongju National University and Pohang University of Science and Technology, and 12 companies including Daesang Corporation. In total, more than 200 top domestic experts from local governments, academia, and industry will participate to fully promote the projects 'Year-Round Supply and Mass Cultivation Technology Development for Land-Based Seaweed Seeds' and 'Development of Land-Based Seaweed Production Systems and Quality Control Technology.'
A county official stated, "We plan to actively participate in joint research for sustainable high-quality seaweed seed production and land-based aquaculture technology development suitable for Goheung County, lead the advancement of land-based seaweed aquaculture technology, and elevate Goheung's seaweed industry to a world-class level."
Meanwhile, since 2023, the county has been working with Daesang Corporation and local fisheries company Hana Fisheries to commercialize land-based seaweed aquaculture. Through the first pilot cultivation, they succeeded in growing raw seaweed to a size of 40 to 50 centimeters. Based on this achievement, they were selected for the 2024 eco-friendly aquaculture promotion project and are currently establishing facilities for the second pilot cultivation.
