"Autonomous Work for Seven Hours"
Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) startup, unveiled its latest AI model, "Claude Opus 4," on May 22 (local time).
Anthropic, which has received large-scale investments from Amazon and Google, is considered a strong competitor to OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.
Anthropic explained that this new AI model, which is specialized for coding, "can autonomously write computer code for much longer periods than previous systems." The company also emphasized that the model can provide instant answers, take time to reason through complex questions, and perform web search functions.
Mike Krieger, Chief Product Officer (CPO) at Anthropic, stated that "Claude Opus 4" is significant for Anthropic's goal of developing increasingly autonomous AI. He said, "Opus 4 is focused on enabling independent work over longer periods," and added, "This model can continue coding for seven hours." He further explained, "For AI to achieve economic value and productivity, the model must be able to work autonomously for extended periods," and noted, "We are also expanding the boundaries in the agent field."
Jared Kaplan, Chief Science Officer (CSO) at Anthropic, said that the focus was on improving performance in complex tasks rather than just chatbot functionality, stating, "We are developing so that users can delegate many tasks to AI at once."
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, who were founding members of OpenAI. Google has been investing in Anthropic for several years and currently holds about 14% of its shares, while Amazon has also invested $8 billion.
