Chinese National Arrested for 'Dongtan Knife Rampage'... Court Cites Risk of Evidence Destruction and Flight

A Chinese national in his 40s was arrested after committing a knife rampage at Dongtan Lake Park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.

On May 21, Lee Sungyul, chief judge in charge of warrants at the Suwon District Court, held a pretrial detention hearing for suspect A, a man in his 40s charged with attempted murder, and issued an arrest warrant. Judge Lee stated that the warrant was issued due to concerns about destruction of evidence and the risk of flight.

Previously, at around 4:03 a.m. on May 19, A is accused of threatening five men and women in their 20s by rushing at them with a knife on the deck of a bar in the waterfront commercial area of Dongtan Lake Park, located in Dongtan 2 New Town, Hwaseong. At the time of his arrest, A was carrying three knives. It was found that he committed the crime after drinking at home and then moving to Dongtan Lake Park.

During a police investigation, A stated, "The citizens were too noisy, so I wanted to scare them. I had no intention to kill." He also said, "I work as a restaurant chef, and I used the knives I use at work for the crime."

The police plan to refer him to the prosecution as soon as the investigation is completed.
