The Chungnam Provincial Police Agency and the Chungnam Autonomous Police Committee mobilized a large number of traffic police, local police, and riot squad officers across Chungnam Province on the evening of May 20 to conduct a crackdown on drunk driving and alcohol-related traffic violations?including jaywalking under the influence?in an effort to eradicate alcohol-related traffic accidents.

According to police on May 21, at approximately 2:52 p.m. that day, a passenger car driver, who was intoxicated, drove in the wrong direction near Namjang Samgeori in Hongseong-eup, Hongseong-gun, and collided head-on with another passenger car that was traveling in the correct direction. The wrong-way driver died as a result of the crash.

On the evening of the same day as the fatal drunk driving accident, police deployed a total of 523 personnel?including traffic police, local police, and riot squad officers?around nightlife districts, restaurant areas, residential neighborhoods, village entrances, and highway tollgates in 15 cities and counties across Chungnam. As a result of the crackdown on drunk driving and seatbelt violations, 68 cases were detected, including 18 cases in Geumsan, 15 in Nonsan, and 8 in Hongseong.

The violations detected included 26 cases of drunk driving (9 resulting in license cancellation, 17 in license suspension), 35 cases of seatbelt violations, 6 cases of helmet violations, and 1 case of signal violation.

In Geumsan, 25 officers?including 18 from the riot squad?were deployed to block the Jinsan-ro lanes around the Isul Park roundabout and conduct intensive inspections. As a result, 2 cases of drunk driving (1 resulting in license cancellation, 1 in license suspension) and 16 cases of seatbelt violations were detected.

A representative from the Chungnam Provincial Police Agency stated, "In order to ensure the safety of residents and prevent traffic accidents, we are conducting continuous crackdowns on drunk driving and other traffic law violations throughout Chungnam. Moving forward, we plan to continue unannounced drunk driving crackdowns both day and night, regardless of whether the area is urban or rural."
