Hong Junpyo Meets with Special Delegation
"No Change in My Position"
Former Daegu Mayor Hong Junpyo, after meeting with the People Power Party's special delegation, ultimately refused to join the campaign committee for presidential candidate Kim Moonsoo, stating, "I will return after the presidential election."
On May 21, Hong posted on Facebook that "the entire delegation has left" and reaffirmed, "My position to return after the presidential election remains unchanged."
Hong, who is currently staying in Hawaii, United States, met with the People Power Party's special delegation there on May 19 and 20. The delegation included lawmakers Yoo Sangbeom and Kim Daesik, former Namyangju Mayor Jo Gwanghan, and campaign spokesperson Lee Seongbae. They delivered a handwritten letter from candidate Kim and requested Hong's support for the campaign.
Hong conveyed to the delegation that he supports candidate Kim Moonsoo and will not join forces with the Democratic Party, but ultimately did not agree to join the campaign committee.
After being eliminated from the People Power Party's presidential primary on April 29, Hong announced his retirement from politics, stating, "My role in this presidential election ends here." He subsequently declared his departure from the party and left for Hawaii on May 10.
