Seoul to Operate Sillim Public Garage Rainwater Storage Tank to Prevent Flooding in Dorimcheon

Stores up to 35,000 Tons of Rainwater
Adjusts Dorimcheon Water Level by 10 cm

On May 21, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will officially operate the 'Sillim Public Garage Rainwater Storage Tank' to prevent flooding in the Dorimcheon area in preparation for heavy rainfall during the summer season.

Previously, in response to the increasing frequency of localized heavy rainfall due to recent climate change, the city conducted pre-inspections and emergency operation drills for rainwater storage facilities starting from May 8 to ensure a prompt response in emergency situations.

The Sillim Public Garage Rainwater Storage Tank is a large-scale storage facility installed underground at a public garage currently under construction to address the shortage of bus depots in the Gwanak-gu area and to support stable bus operations. The rainwater storage tank temporarily stores water from the Dorimcheon during heavy rainfall, quickly lowering the river's water level to prevent flooding. It can store up to 35,000 tons of rainwater and is expected to significantly reduce flood damage in the Samseong-dong and Seorim-dong areas of Gwanak-gu by actually lowering the Dorimcheon water level by about 10 centimeters.

This facility began construction in 2018 and is scheduled for completion by the end of this year. Full-scale operation started on May 15, coinciding with the flood control preparation period. For more systematic management, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has clearly assigned roles to relevant agencies, including the city government, Gwanak-gu Office, supervisory teams, and construction companies, and has prepared and distributed an operation manual. Ahn Daehee, head of the Seoul Urban Infrastructure Headquarters, stated, "We have completed pre-inspections and operation drills for the drainage storage tank to minimize flood damage during the summer," adding, "We will do our best to ensure the timely installation and operation of disaster prevention facilities."
