Police: "Not a Misogynistic Crime, but a Crime with Abnormal Motives"
It has been confirmed that Kim Sungjin (32), who killed a woman in her 60s by wielding a weapon at a mart in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, has been diagnosed as a psychopath.
An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated at a regular press briefing on May 19, "According to the results of the psychopathy assessment, the suspect was found to be a psychopath," adding, "The crime has been analyzed as a crime with abnormal motives."
The psychopathy diagnosis uses the 'Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R)', which consists of 20 items and evaluates core characteristics of psychopathy such as lack of guilt, remorse, and empathy, callousness, impulsivity, and irresponsibility.
The PCL-R has a maximum score of 40 points. In Korea, a score of 25 or higher is considered psychopathic, while in the United States, the threshold is 30 points. The average score for the general population is around 15 points.
Kim was arrested at the scene on April 22 at around 6:20 p.m. after unwrapping and wielding a weapon that was on display at a mart near Mia Station.
As a result of this crime, a woman in her 60s who was attacked died, and another victim, a woman in her 40s, was injured.
On April 29, the police held a personal information disclosure review committee and released Kim Sungjin's face, name, and age, stating, "The brutality of the crime and the seriousness of the harm have been recognized, there is sufficient evidence of the crime, and disclosure of personal information is necessary for the public interest, including crime prevention."
