Gyeonggi Province has produced 100,000 copies of promotional materials containing national action guidelines for landslide response and distributed them to 31 cities and counties within the province.
These materials were created to prevent casualties caused by landslides during the summer and to encourage active participation from residents.
The materials concisely cover topics such as: ▲ signs indicating a potential landslide ▲ action guidelines in the event of a landslide ▲ evacuation sites and other essential information needed for preemptive evacuation.
In particular, the evacuation sites can be checked via a QR code, and for residents who may have difficulty using electronic devices, the materials include information on local evacuation sites to enhance effectiveness in situations where preemptive evacuation is necessary.
Gyeonggi Province posted the materials at administrative welfare centers, village halls, and senior centers, and distributed them individually to residents living in areas vulnerable to landslides.
Additionally, with the summer peak season approaching, the province has decided to distribute the materials to lodging facilities located in mountainous areas.
Kim Sungjung, the First Vice Governor of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Landslides are difficult to predict in advance, and the time available to respond is extremely short, so preemptive evacuation is most important." He added, "Through the distribution of these materials, we hope that residents living in landslide-prone areas and those staying at lodging facilities during the vacation season will pay attention to landslide disasters and that awareness of the need for preemptive evacuation in the event of landslide warning signs will spread among the public."
Over the past 10 years, approximately 84% of landslides nationwide have occurred in July and August, and casualties from landslides have accounted for 32% of summer disaster-related fatalities. Landslides are a particularly challenging area of disaster management because, due to factors such as topography, geology, and rainfall, they occur suddenly, are difficult to predict in advance, and allow only limited response time.
