Gu Joo, the presidential candidate affiliated with the Liberty Unification Party, abruptly withdrew from the race on May 18.
According to the National Election Commission, Gu officially submitted his resignation as a candidate on this day, and his name has already been removed from the commission's website.
Gu had completed his registration for the 21st presidential election as candidate number 6 for the Liberty Unification Party. Within the party, he had served as a Supreme Council member and spokesperson. Last year, he also ran for the National Assembly in the general election as the party's proportional representative candidate number 6.
Gu is scheduled to hold a press conference at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, on May 19, where he will personally explain the reasons and background behind his decision to withdraw.
With Gu's withdrawal, the National Election Commission's debate for "candidates excluded from official invitations," scheduled for May 19, will now proceed as a two-person debate between independent candidate Song Jin-ho and Hwang Kyo-ahn.
