Mungyeong City Council to Begin Full-Scale Construction of New Building... Anticipated as New Landmark for Old Downtown

Existing City Council Building Rated D Grade, Built in 1968
26 Billion Won Invested, Completion Targeted for 2027

Mungyeong City in Gyeongbuk is set to officially begin the construction of a new complex building that will house both the Jeomchon 2-dong Administrative Welfare Center and the City Council, replacing the existing City Council building, which must be demolished due to structural safety issues.

According to Mungyeong City, the current City Council building, constructed in 1968, is an aging structure that received a D grade in a detailed safety inspection in 2018, and was classified as a "building at risk of collapse in the event of an earthquake."

As a result, Mungyeong City confirmed the construction of a new building after conducting a feasibility study in 2019, and has since established a "Public Office Building Construction Fund" to secure the necessary financial resources.

Subsequently, in 2021, the site was selected as a target for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "Public Building Renewal Leading Project," and the city decided to pursue a complex building model that would accommodate both the Jeomchon 2-dong Administrative Welfare Center and the City Council.

In August 2023, Mungyeong City signed a consignment contract with Korea Asset Management Corporation (KAMCO) and began full-scale implementation of the "Mungyeong City Council Complex Building Consignment Development Project."

The total project cost is 26 billion won. The building will have one basement level and four floors above ground. The first and second floors will house the administrative welfare center and community education facilities, while the third and fourth floors will be dedicated to City Council offices and meeting spaces.

Currently, architectural design is underway, with completion targeted for July. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of the year, with completion aimed for the second half of 2027.

Mungyeong City has adopted a consignment development approach to enhance the professionalism and construction quality of the public building. Korea Asset Management Corporation will be fully responsible for all phases of the project.

Once the new building is completed, the current City Council building will be demolished. The annex building at the rear will be preserved and repurposed as the Mungyeong City Archives and a document storage facility for official records.

A Mungyeong City official stated, "When the complex building is completed, it will harmonize with the recently renovated Central Park and help revitalize the old downtown area. We expect it to become a focal point for urban regeneration and a new landmark representing Mungyeong."
