45th Anniversary Ceremony of the May 18 Democratization Movement at the Provincial Government
"Spirit of May, a Milestone for Democracy During Martial Law"
Kim Taekyun, Chairman of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, attended the "Jeonnam 5·18 Democratization Movement 45th Anniversary Ceremony" held at the Jeonnam Provincial Government on May 16, 2025, and stated, "I will further strengthen legislative activities to uncover the truth about the 5·18 Democratization Movement and to support those involved in the movement."
The ceremony was held in a solemn atmosphere with the attendance of about 300 people, including Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam, Park Moonok, Chairman of the Council's Steering Committee, other provincial council members, members of organizations related to the 5·18 movement, and bereaved families. The event included commemorative performances, a floral tribute, greetings from those recognized for their democratic contributions, a memorial performance, and the singing of "March for the Beloved." The ceremony served as an opportunity to reflect on the spirit of May 1980 and to honor the significance of the democratization movement.

In his memorial address, Chairman Kim said, "I bow my head in gratitude and respect before the spirits of those who gave their lives for the democratization of this land," and added, "I also offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families who have endured long years of pain and suffering."
He continued, "In the process of overcoming the 12·3 Martial Law, the 5·18 Democratization Movement became a steadfast milestone in defending democracy," emphasizing, "Looking back on May in Gwangju, we were able to choose courage over silence and resistance over oppression."
Chairman Kim stated, "Our democracy owes a great debt to the spirit of May, and out of responsibility for that noble sacrifice, it is now our turn to carry on that spirit," adding, "The Jeonnam Provincial Council will make even greater efforts to ensure that the 5·18 Democratization Movement becomes a proud chapter in history that the entire nation remembers and learns from."
