Yangsan City Conducts On-Site Safety Inspections of Essential Public Facilities

Na Dongyeon Visits Yangsan Sewage Treatment Plant
Emphasizes Thorough Safety Management and Inspections

Yangsan City in South Gyeongsang Province is conducting on-site inspections of major facilities as part of the "National Safety Transformation, 2025 Intensive Safety Inspection," which is being carried out from April 14 to June 13.

Accordingly, on May 15, Na Dongyeon, mayor of Yangsan, visited the Yangsan Sewage Treatment Plant, a key facility in the city, together with relevant public officials, representatives from the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, and private sector experts to conduct an on-site inspection.

The Yangsan Sewage Treatment Plant was completed in 1998 and expanded in 2004, giving it a daily treatment capacity of 98,000 cubic meters. It is one of the most important sewage facilities in Yangsan. In consideration of the significance of this facility, the head of the institution personally visited the site for inspection.

This inspection was conducted jointly with private sector experts from each field, focusing on areas within the sewage treatment plant where ground subsidence is a concern and on response manuals for leakage accidents within the drying building.

In particular, following recent reports of asphyxiation accidents during confined space work, safety inspections of confined spaces such as sedimentation tanks were also strengthened. During the inspection of confined spaces, a joint team with the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency verified work procedures and essential inspection items, directly checked the ventilation status before and during work, measured oxygen and hazardous gas concentrations, and ensured the use of equipment to prevent asphyxiation accidents, thereby conducting a thorough and practical safety inspection.

This year, Yangsan City is inspecting the safety management status of a total of 82 facilities at risk of disasters and safety accidents, including the Yangsan Sewage Treatment Plant, together with experts in civil engineering, architecture, electricity, gas, and fire safety. For any issues identified during the inspections, the city is thoroughly implementing follow-up measures such as repairs and reinforcements.

Mayor Na Dongyeon stated, "The sewage treatment plant is a critical piece of infrastructure, and although the work environment is difficult due to odors and other factors, and workers tend to avoid it, an accident here could paralyze the entire functioning of the city. I urge all workers to take pride in their work, remain vigilant at all times, and make every effort to ensure safety."

The "National Safety Transformation Intensive Safety Inspection" is a nationwide initiative in which public officials, private sector experts, and citizens participate together to intensively inspect facilities at risk of disasters or accidents or those of high public interest, and to promote a culture of safety through safety campaigns and other activities.
