Establishing an Integrated Management System for Public, Private, and Village Records
Kim Kyunghee, Mayor: "We Will Fully Pass On the City's Heritage to Future Generations"
The 'Icheon Municipal Archives', the first permanent records management institution (archive) established by a basic local government in Gyeonggi Province, was officially launched on May 16.
The 'Icheon Municipal Archives' will play a strategic role in collecting, preserving, and utilizing the 'Icheon Documentary Heritage' by establishing an integrated records management system that covers not only the city's public records but also records from affiliated public institutions, as well as private and village records that capture the lives of citizens and the history of local communities. In particular, the Archives will go beyond simple preservation to provide services such as online and offline exhibitions and publications.
The city has dedicated ten years to elevating the former 'Icheon City Records Center' to the status of 'Icheon Municipal Archives'. Starting in 2015 with the deacidification of permanent records, the city has carried out various initiatives, including the operation of a village recorders group, web records collection, the establishment of a digital archive system, the creation of a web archiving system, and the launch of a records center website. In 2021, the city also enacted the 'Ordinance on the Management of Public Records of Icheon City'.
After preparing record preservation facilities and equipment, as well as a permanent records management system, the city has now completed the process of elevating the records center to an official archives. Going forward, the city plans to discover and document records that reflect the lives of citizens and the region's identity, and to continuously promote projects related to exhibitions, education, and content development centered around the Archives.
Kim Kyunghee, Mayor of Icheon, stated, "With the launch of the Archives, Icheon's history will be fully preserved, researched, and shared within Icheon. Through this, we will fulfill our mission to faithfully pass today's memories on to future generations."
