Hyoryeong Senior Welfare Town (hereinafter referred to as Hyoryeong Town), affiliated with the Gwangju Social Service Agency, held a ceremony on May 14 at the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising.
More than 50 participants, including Hyoryeong Town members, children from the only public daycare center in Gwangju Seo-gu (Director Moon Sunjeong), and staff, took part in the event. They honored the May spirit across generations and reflected on the precious value of democracy during this meaningful occasion.
In support of Gwangju City's initiative to become a "city of daejabo (large posters)," participants traveled to the cemetery using public transportation. At the site, they engaged in activities such as paying respects, cleaning tombstones, and sharing jumokbap (rice balls).
They also took part in cultural commentary and experiential activities, which provided an opportunity to reflect on the historical significance of the May 18 Democratic Uprising and the value of democracy.
Jung Kyungnam, head of Hyoryeong Town, stated, "This event was a valuable occasion where both seniors and children participated together, allowing us to experience the spirit of solidarity and sharing across generations. We will continue to operate various programs that practice the spirit of community in cooperation with the local community."
