Seoul Approves Modified Detailed Development Plan
New Gangbuk District Office to Feature 6 Underground and 17 Above-Ground Floors
The Seoul Gangbuk District Office building, which marks its 51st anniversary this year, will be transformed into a resident-friendly administrative complex.
On May 14, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it had convened the Urban and Architecture Joint Committee and approved, with modifications, the “Suyu-Bundong District Unit Plan Decision (Amendment) and the Detailed Development Plan for the Gangbuk District Office Special Planning Zone.”
As a result of this decision, the Gangbuk District Office will be reborn as a new building with six underground floors, seventeen above-ground floors, and a total floor area of approximately 69,000 square meters. The current Gangbuk District Office, built in 1974, has long suffered from limited space and aging infrastructure.
In particular, the new building is expected to serve as an administrative complex that combines office functions with community service facilities. The building will house the district office, district council, public health center, community center, and various community service facilities such as a daycare center, youth support center, care center, resident hall, book lounge, and observatory. The open plaza to be created at ground level will be used as a community space for residents.
The architectural plan for the new building is based on the winning design selected through a design competition held in April of last year. Construction is scheduled to begin in June, with completion expected in December 2028.
