The Honam University International Exchange Office held a Korean-Chinese traditional costume experience activity on May 13 as part of the "Global Kanbu, Family-Style Mentoring (PaMa) Program among Foreign Students, Korean Students, and Faculty Members."
This activity was organized to promote mutual understanding of both countries' cultures and to strengthen friendships. Participating students shared a special experience by trying on Hanbok and Qipao themselves.
On the day of the event, about 20 mentor-mentee teams consisting of Korean students and Chinese international students participated. They learned about the history and symbolism embedded in each other's traditional costumes, and enjoyed a friendly atmosphere as they practiced traditional etiquette and took photos while wearing the outfits.
Kim Naeun, a student from the Department of Airline Service, said, "My Chinese friend, who tried on Hanbok for the first time, really liked it, and I also felt a new appreciation for the beauty of Chinese traditional culture by wearing a Qipao for the first time. It was a valuable time in which we were able to understand each other's cultures more deeply through direct experience."
Wang Jiayuan, a Chinese international student from the Department of Airline Service, also shared, "When my Korean friend wore a Qipao and we took photos together, it felt so natural and enjoyable. Although our cultures are different, I felt we became closer by respecting and experiencing them together. I was glad that I could get closer to my Korean friends through this kind of activity."
Professor Han Uijin from the Department of Airline Service, a participating faculty member who planned the program, stated, "We aimed to provide an environment where students could become close like family, going beyond simple mentoring. I hope that cultural exchange activities like the traditional costume experience will help foster natural understanding and respect for one another."
