SeoulTech Joint Experimental Laboratory Receives KOLAS International Testing Laboratory Accreditation

The Joint Experimental Laboratory of Seoul National University of Science and Technology announced on May 16 that it received international accreditation as a testing laboratory from the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) under the National Institute of Technology and Standards on May 9. This marks the first case among administrative organizations of national universities across the country.

The KOLAS international accreditation for testing laboratories is a system that evaluates the technical competence and quality system of a testing laboratory according to the international standard ISO/IEC 17025, allowing the accredited institution to issue internationally recognized test reports. KOLAS is a member of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC), and test reports issued by accredited institutions are recognized as having the same credibility in over 100 countries worldwide under the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA).

With this KOLAS accreditation, the Joint Experimental Laboratory of Seoul National University of Science and Technology has secured international-level reliability and objectivity in its testing and analysis capabilities. Additionally, the university expects this accreditation to enhance the international reliability of its test data, expand industry-academia-research collaboration, and strengthen its ability to respond to domestic and international R&D projects.

The KOLAS-accredited items this time include three test standards in the field of mechanical testing for metal and plastic products (▲Measurement of metal coating thickness using SEM and TEM ▲Measurement of glass transition temperature using DSC) and two test standards in the field of chemical testing (▲Analysis of mercury, cadmium, and lead using ICP-OES). The Joint Experimental Laboratory plans to expand the scope of its accreditation by aiming for additional accreditation in tensile testing using a fatigue tester in the first half of next year.

Choi Seungjun, head of the Joint Experimental Laboratory, stated, "This KOLAS international accreditation is the result of the effort and dedication of all members of the laboratory," adding, "We will continue to strengthen cooperation with internal and external research institutions and industries, and take the lead in building a global research infrastructure through continuous quality management, technological advancement, and expansion of the scope of accreditation."
