Damyang County in South Jeolla Province announced on May 13 that the introduction of eco-friendly operations during the 24th Damyang Bamboo Festival, held from May 2 to 6, resulted in tangible reductions in environmental impact.

The county supplied approximately 140,000 reusable containers throughout the local food halls and encouraged visitors to voluntarily participate by announcing in advance the restriction of single-use items. As a result, the use of single-use items was reduced by about 2 tons, leading to a reduction of 82 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. This is equivalent to the amount of greenhouse gases absorbed by 553 trees over the course of one year.

The county also received positive feedback for promoting a culture of waste separation, as visitors were encouraged to return used containers themselves at dedicated return booths installed throughout the festival grounds.

A county official explained, "We were able to achieve tangible results because residents and tourists understood the purpose of supplying reusable containers and voluntarily participated."

Based on these achievements, the county plans to expand support for reusable containers to township-level festivals and continue upcycling experience activities for students through school visit programs.
