Experience Joseon Astronomy as a Gwansanggam Intern
Special Lectures, Talk Shows, and Workshops on Space and Aviation
Outdoor Activities: Hot Air Balloon, Paper Airplanes, and More
The National Science Museum announced on May 13 that it will hold the science and culture event "Emergency Emergency" for one day on May 24 to mark "Space and Aviation Day" (May 27), which has been designated as a national commemorative day for the first time this year.
The main program, "Joseon Gwansanggam Internship," is an immersive ancient astronomy experience designed for elementary school students interested in astronomy. Participants, who are in grades 4 to 6?matching the age of actual Gwansanggam trainees?will wear traditional attire and experience a day in the life of a trainee.
Participants will climb the Jagyeokru water clock, write an astronomical observation log (Seongbyeoncheukhudancha), read the time using the Angbuilgu sundial, and take part in making an armillary sphere (Honnyeonui), as well as take the traditional Yin-Yang exam. The program concludes with a graduation ceremony where participants receive an official rank. The program attracted significant interest, with 118 applicants for 40 available spots for grades 4 to 6, and the selection of trainees has now been completed.
There will also be special lectures, talk shows, and hands-on workshops related to space science, aviation, and mobility.
Highlights include a lecture by Park Sangjun, head of Seoul SF Archive, reflecting on 100 years of Korean science fiction under the theme "Where Have All the Space Boys Gone?"; a screening and movie talk for the short animation "Johnny Express"; and a hands-on workshop for elementary students led by science communicator Gaegul on the topic "What Happens If You Die in Space?"
Outdoors, the "Aviation and Mobility Time Travel Experience Zone" will offer activities such as adjusting the neutral buoyancy of a hot air balloon, flying paper airplanes and aero rockets, and launching palm-sized propellers.
