Discussion on Changes in Hangeul Usage Environment Transformed by Artificial Intelligence on King Sejong's Birthday, May 15

The National Hangeul Museum under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on May 12 that it will hold an academic conference on May 15 to commemorate the birthday of King Sejong, under the theme "King Sejong's Hangeul and Artificial Intelligence: Leading Innovation in the Era."

This academic conference has been organized to mark the first time that the birthday of King Sejong, which celebrates its 628th anniversary this year, has been designated as a national memorial day. The event aims to honor King Sejong's spirit in creating Hangeul and to examine how artificial intelligence has brought changes to our daily lives and various fields, focusing on the evolving environment for the use of Korean and Hangeul and the utilization of technology. It will also provide an in-depth discussion on the future of Hangeul and museums.


The conference will open with a congratulatory address by Kim Juwon, President of the Hangeul Society, followed by a keynote speech from Lee Sangho, Head of AI Safety and Quality at Kakao. A total of nine presentations and a comprehensive discussion are scheduled to take place.


Topic 1: Changes in the Korean and Hangeul Usage Environment in the Age of Artificial Intelligence will cover how the concept of "search" can be redefined in the era of large language models (presented by Kang Inho, Head of Department at Naver), the differences between human natural language and the language and text used in artificial intelligence and how technology has evolved (presented by Professor Nam Hoseong of Korea University), and strategies for Hangeul to coexist and survive with new technologies in the era of mechanization, informatization, and artificial intelligence (presented by Ahn Daehyeok, Executive Director at Seegene Inc.).


Topic 2: Utilization of Artificial Intelligence Technology in Korean and Hangeul will introduce how AI technology is replacing human roles and facing limitations in areas such as language acquisition, creation, and translation (presented by Professor Hwang Soonhee of Hongik University). It will also present cases of building and utilizing Korean and Hangeul language resources and technology for the advancement of Korean-style AI technology by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (presented by Kim Sohee, Researcher at the National Institute of the Korean Language, and Kim Sujeong, Director at the National Library of Korea).


Topic 3: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Museums will feature museum experts introducing cases of museum visitor services, national heritage preservation, and digital archiving using AI technology, and will provide outlooks on the future of museums (presented by Choi Seongae, Researcher at the National Museum of Korea, and Professor Lee Jonguk of the Korea National University of Cultural Heritage).


Kang Jeongwon, Director of the National Hangeul Museum, stated, "Artificial intelligence technology has become deeply embedded in every aspect of our lives," and added, "Through this academic conference, we will actively work to create an environment in which Korean and Hangeul can shine even brighter in the AI era, and to explore new possibilities for Hangeul."
