Gijang County has launched a final all-out effort to secure approval for the preliminary feasibility study (pre-feasibility study) of the Jeonggwan Line urban railway. On May 9, Gijang County expressed its strong commitment to the project by delivering a petition with signatures from more than 140,000 residents to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.
On this day, Jung Jongbok, Mayor of Gijang County, Jung Dongman, Member of the National Assembly, and Park Hongbok, Chairman of the Gijang County Council, visited the National Assembly to meet Kim Yoonsang, Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance, and personally delivered the petition. The petition reflects the strong desire of county residents for the early construction of the Jeonggwan Line.
Mayor Jung emphasized, "This petition is not just a stack of paper," adding, "It is the earnest voice of every resident yearning for the Jeonggwan Line to pass the pre-feasibility study, and it is both a necessity and an urgent request for the future of Gijang County."
The Jeonggwan Line is a route connecting Jwacheon Station on the Donghae Line with Wolpyeong in Jeonggwan-eup, serving as a branch of the Busan-Yangsan-Ulsan metropolitan railway. The county believes that this line, which will be linked to 13 industrial complexes, K-Culture Town, and a baseball theme park, among other large-scale development infrastructure, will serve as a catalyst for balanced regional development.
Since March, Gijang County has conducted a signature campaign themed around a railway track, aiming for 111,111 signatures, but ultimately garnered participation from 142,786 people, far exceeding the original goal. The county has also announced a "countywide rally" on May 18, with more than 3,000 local organizations and residents expected to participate, in an effort to further expand public support for passing the pre-feasibility study.
A county official stated, "The submission of this petition is not simply an expression of intent, but the first step toward achieving concrete policy implementation," and added, "We will continue to work closely with the central government to ensure that the Jeonggwan Line project gets firmly on track."
