National Heritage Administration Contest
"Expanding Cultural Enjoyment Rights"

On May 7, Jangheung County in Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim Sung) announced that its Hyanggyo·Seowon Cultural Heritage Utilization Project, titled 'Ja~Heung, I Am Hyanggyo,' was selected for the second consecutive year as part of the 2025 Regional Cultural Heritage Utilization Project organized by the National Heritage Administration.

This project was designed to inherit the original value and authenticity of the spiritual culture embodied in hyanggyo and seowon, and to recreate them in a modern context, with the aim of fostering them as key cultural heritage resources for the local community.

The project will utilize cultural heritage sites such as Jangheung Hyanggyo, Jangheung Haedongsa, and Mansusa, all of which are historical spaces. Through a variety of programs?including experiences, educational activities, and performances that embody the spirit of scholars and Korean literature?the project aims to expand cultural enjoyment rights to a broader audience.

The program consists of four parts. The main program, 'Tokkiya Hyanggyoe Byeoseul Gaja' (Rabbit, Let's Go to Hyanggyo for an Official Post), takes its name from a pansori fairy tale by Lee Cheongjun, a writer from Jangheung County.

The project introduces etiquette education experiences and the concept of lifelong learning, which is the educational purpose of hyanggyo, for future generations. It also provides therapy programs for transportation-vulnerable groups and seniors, thereby fostering and providing experiences in civic values based on the spirit of scholars.

An official from the county said, "We hope that the diverse programs of 'Ja~Heung, I Am Hyanggyo,' which utilize Jangheung's cultural heritage, will serve as an opportunity for local residents to communicate through culture and to enjoy the region's cultural heritage."
