National Museum of Korea to Explore Islam in Depth Ahead of Islamic Gallery Opening in November

The National Museum of Korea announced on May 7 that, in collaboration with the AsIA Regional Humanities Center of the HK+ Mega Asia Research Project at Seoul National University Asia Center, it will hold the "2025 AsIA Humanities Asset Lecture Series - Encountering Islam" seven times through June 19.

This lecture series has been organized to provide a broad understanding of the Islamic world in conjunction with the opening of the Islamic Gallery at the National Museum of Korea in November. The "AsIA Humanities Asset Lecture Series" is a program planned in 2021 to promote the dissemination and popularization of knowledge about Asia’s humanities assets.


The lectures cover a wide range of topics related to the Islamic world, aiming to deepen understanding of the Islamic Gallery scheduled to open at the National Museum of Korea in November. The first lecture, "Life and Culture of Islam" (May 8), will broadly address the Islamic world and its history. The second lecture, "History of Islam and the Formation of Cultural Spheres" (May 22), will shed light on the establishment of Islamic empires and the development of various dynasties. The third lecture, "History of Islamic Science" (May 22), will introduce various aspects of science and alchemy that developed within Islamic civilization.


The fourth lecture, "Islamic Literature: The Quran and Literary Works of the Islamic World" (May 29), will explore the values of Islamic people as reflected in the Quran and Islamic literature. The fifth lecture, "Islamic Architecture and Art" (June 5), will introduce the religious perspectives and nationalism expressed in Islamic architecture and artworks. The sixth lecture, "The Spread of Islamic Culture through Trade" (June 12), will cover the formation of markets and cities through trade and examine the process by which Islamic culture spread to Southeast Asia. Finally, the seventh lecture, "Exchange between Korea and the Islamic World and the Present" (June 19), will discuss exchanges with Korea based on current understanding of the Islamic world.


The lectures will be broadcast live every Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the National Museum of Korea’s YouTube channel from May 8 to June 19. Anyone can watch without prior registration.
