Gwangyang City Launches Nationwide Naming Contest for Gubongsan Experiential Sculpture

Until May 21...
Judging Criteria Include Suitability and Creativity

Gwangyang City in South Jeolla Province, which aspires to be a global future city, has launched a nationwide naming contest to select the name for the Gubongsan experiential sculpture.

The Gubongsan experiential sculpture, which is being developed through a cooperative partnership with POSCO that values coexistence, features an inverted triangular steel structure. Its unique design allows visitors to ascend to the summit by circling seven times along a triangular ramp. This design symbolically embodies Gwangyang's infinite growth potential and future-oriented image as the "City of Light and Steel."

Gubongsan, the site of the sculpture, is a historically significant location that once housed a beacon mound. It offers a panoramic 360-degree view of the Gwangyang Steelworks, Yi Sun-sin Bridge, Suncheon, Yeosu, Namhae, and the entire southern coastal region, and is highly accessible.

The contest is open to all citizens of the Republic of Korea. Participants can submit their entries through the Gwangyang City Hall website, the specialized contest platforms 'ThinkU' and 'ThinkGood,' or by using the provided QR code, until May 21.

Entries will be evaluated based on suitability, creativity, popularity, applicability, and sustainability, with the judging process conducted privately. The city plans to select a name that reflects the spatial characteristics of the site, effectively conveys the meaning and symbolism of the sculpture, and leaves a strong, intuitive impression that is internationally recognizable.

In addition to the final winner, the top five entries will be selected. The grand prize winner will receive a cash award of 1 million won, and each of the four excellence award winners will receive 500,000 won. Taxes and public charges are the responsibility of the winners. There will be no separate award ceremony, and winners will be notified individually.

The city will register all trademark rights for the selected name, including naming and logo, and plans to strengthen the sculpture's identity and brand value through ongoing exposure and utilization.

On May 7, Kim Miran, head of the Tourism Division, stated, "The Gubongsan experiential sculpture, which symbolizes Gwangyang as the City of Light and Steel, will become a landmark commemorating the everlasting coexistence and cooperation between the city and POSCO."

She added, "As this naming contest is a valuable process in which citizens and the public complete the meaning of the sculpture together, we hope that an internationally resonant name that everyone can relate to will be born."
