This event was held under the theme of "Inevitable Technologies and Urban Design for Sustainable Cities," and featured a special lecture by Lee Jaeseon, professor of Urban Engineering at Yonsei University.
In his lecture, Professor Lee explained that "inevitable technologies" are those that continuously evolve in response to new technologies and changing human needs, and that "urban design" is a field that addresses the relationship between people and the environment. He emphasized that creating a city means combining "inevitable technologies" with "urban design."
He cited automobiles, steel-frame structures, and the internet as representative inevitable technologies of the 20th century, each enabling the development of automobile-centered horizontal cities, high-rise vertical cities, and ubiquitous-based digital cities, respectively. He went on to explain that in the 21st century, as human needs have shifted toward health, convenience, and survival, there is increasing attention on pedestrian- and bicycle-centered healthy cities, artificial intelligence-based Urban AI cities, and eco-friendly, carbon-reducing cities.
Professor Lee particularly emphasized that, in order to create sustainable cities, it is essential to minimize the impact on nature and to restore the sense of community in urban life.
After the lecture, participants engaged in active discussions on ways to realize sustainable cities based on Busan's unique geographical and environmental characteristics.
Shin Changho, President of Busan Urban Corporation, stated, "Realizing sustainable cities through a balance between technology and urban design is a key role for public developers," and added, "All executives and employees will work together to lead the flow of technological change and create urban spaces that can enhance the quality of life for citizens."
