On May 6, Lee Jae Myung, the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, referenced former Progressive Party leader Cho Bongam and former President Kim Dae Jung, both of whom were sentenced to death by the judiciary during the era of military rule, and declared, “This time, we must survive and create a new nation together.”

At a traditional market in Jeungpyeong County, Chungbuk, Lee said, “Cho Bongam, a great politician who established a new economic system in Korea through land reform, fell victim to judicial murder, and Kim Dae Jung was sentenced to death for conspiracy to revolt without having done anything. Why did this happen?”

He also mentioned the ‘Inhyeokdang Rebuilding Committee’ case, asking, “Why did those innocent teachers and ordinary people from the neighborhood disappear at the execution grounds overnight?”

Lee’s remarks are interpreted as emphasizing “judicial murder” by linking the recent Supreme Court’s remand decision on his violation of the Public Official Election Act to the trials that took place under the former military regimes.

Lee stated, “Even now, rebellion continues, and the future is uncertain, making life itself unstable. Business is bad, people don’t want to go outside, and things feel bleak. But on June 3, I believe a new democratic republic, where the people are truly respected as the owners of this country, will begin again.”

He added, “The country is truly in crisis. I am confident that the ongoing second and third attempts at rebellion, and rebellion itself, will be precisely suppressed by the great hands of the people. They must be suppressed.”
