Hopes for Complete Extinguishment Rise with Afternoon Rain
5 to 10 mm of Rain Forecast Again on the 3rd
On the afternoon of May 1, as rain began to fall on Hamji Mountain in Buk-gu, Daegu, expectations grew for the complete extinguishment of the wildfire.
According to the Daegu Regional Meteorological Administration, rain began to fall around 2:30 p.m. in the Buk-gu area where Hamji Mountain is located, and by 3:30 p.m., approximately 1 mm of precipitation had been recorded. An additional 5 to 10 mm of rain is expected to fall in Daegu by nighttime. In Buk-gu, a total of about 5 mm of rain is forecast by 9:00 p.m.
This is the first rainfall since the fire broke out on Hamji Mountain on the afternoon of April 28. With this rain, the emergency situation caused by the wildfire on Hamji Mountain, which was extinguished after 23 hours but reignited on April 29 and has repeatedly flared up and been put out since, is expected to come to an end. Due to the rain, the dry weather warning that had been in effect in Daegu since April 27 was lifted during the day.
After this rain stops, another 5 to 10 mm of rain is forecast for Daegu on May 3. The Daegu Meteorological Administration has advised caution to prevent wildfires and other types of fires, as strong winds with instantaneous speeds of up to 15 meters per second are expected in Daegu today and tomorrow (May 2).
Previously, the massive wildfire in North Gyeongsang Province, which started in Uiseong on March 22 and continued to burn for an extended period, was finally brought under control thanks to a small amount of rain?about 1 mm?that fell between March 27 and 28.
