On May 1, KB Kookmin Card released an analysis of credit and debit card transaction data for the month of May over the past five years. The company examined 414 million transactions from 14.2 million consumers in dining and leisure-related sectors during May from 2020 to 2024.
Sales in the restaurant, coffee, dessert, and delivery sectors on Children's Day were 27% higher than the average daily sales in May over the past five years. On Parents' Day, sales increased by 16%, and on Labor Day, by 15%.
The weather also had a significant impact. On Children's Day in 2023 and 2024, when it rained, sales in the coffee and dessert sectors increased by 5%. However, in 2020 to 2022, when there was no rain, sales in these sectors rose by 17%. For delivery services, sales increased by 46% compared to the May daily average when it rained, but only by 29% when the weather was clear. Restaurant sales remained similar regardless of the weather.
In seven leisure and entertainment sectors, including amusement parks, zoos, botanical gardens, movie theaters, and museums, sales on Children's Day increased by 125%, and by 64% on Labor Day. Notably, last year, when there was a substitute holiday (the 6th), sales increased by 114% on the first day of the holiday, by 83% on the second day, and by 31% on the third day.
An analysis of spending trends among parents presumed to have infants, toddlers, or children in elementary, middle, or high school showed that the choice of destination varied depending on the weather on Children's Day.
On clear days, spending in leisure sectors such as amusement parks, zoos, and botanical gardens increased by 235%. On rainy days, spending in entertainment sectors such as movies, concerts, theater, and museums rose by 185%, while spending in leisure sectors actually decreased by 6%.
A representative from KB Kookmin Card stated, "We hope that all merchants will see increased sales during this holiday period, as there are expected to be many clear days," and added, "We will continue to monitor changes in consumer trends and strive to provide the best possible experience to our customers as KB Kookmin Card."
