The first rice planting of the year has been carried out in Hongseong.
On April 29, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do announced on April 30 that the first rice planting of the year took place in the paddy field of Eom Kwangyong in Sohyangri, Hongseong-eup, marking the official start of the farming season.
The rice variety planted for this year's first rice planting in Mr. Eom's field is "Ppareumi 2," an extremely early-maturing glutinous rice variety for which Hongseong-gun holds the exclusive right to produce. Due to its short growing period, it can be harvested early in August. It is also suitable for double cropping and has strong resistance to rice blast disease.
In particular, the "Ppareumi 2" variety is characterized by low amylose content, resulting in sticky and tasty cooked rice. It is also highly regarded as a climate-resilient variety because it can reduce damage from migratory pests such as the brown planthopper and rice leaf folder.
An official from the county said, "This first rice planting in Hongseong marks a strong start for the production of high-quality rice, and it also signals the full-scale beginning of rice planting in the region to strengthen the competitiveness of local agriculture."
