Announces Departure from Politics and Signals Intention to Leave the Party
Hong Junpyo, former mayor of Daegu, who was eliminated in the second round of the People Power Party's presidential primary, announced on April 29, "Tomorrow, I intend to leave our party, which I have grown fond of," signaling his intention to withdraw from the party.
On Facebook that day, Hong stated, "There is no longer a role for me in the party, and I have lost the justification to remain in politics," explaining his decision.
He added, "I will live a new life," and expressed, "I hope to live in a world without conflict and division."

After the announcement of the second-round primary results at the People Power Party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, on the same day, Hong declared his intention to retire from politics, saying, "I will return to being an ordinary citizen."
He expressed his gratitude, saying, "To the respected citizens, party members, and colleagues, I am truly grateful to have been able to complete my political career so honorably and cleanly over the past 30 years thanks to your support."
He continued, "Now, I will return to being a citizen. I will live comfortably as a private individual," and added, "This is where my role in this presidential election ends."
