Yeongam Police Urgently Arrest Voice Phishing Suspect

Taxi Driver's Report Leads to Pursuit and Arrest of Chinese National

Yeomam Police Station (Chief Yang Jeonghwan) in South Jeolla Province announced on April 29 that the Sinbuk Police Box had urgently arrested a Chinese national on suspicion of voice phishing.


Amid a recent surge in voice phishing crimes, on April 28, a Chinese national suspected of voice phishing was urgently apprehended in Sinbuk-myeon, Yeongam County, while moving there to commit a second crime after fraudulently obtaining 12 million won through voice phishing in Beolgyo, Boseong, South Jeolla Province.

The Sinbuk Police Box received a report from a taxi driver stating, "The passenger appears to be a voice phishing criminal." The police identified the taxi's route and, through a swift emergency deployment, tracked the suspect vehicle and apprehended the voice phishing suspect.


The suspect was confirmed to have collected 12 million won in Boseong, South Jeolla Province, and was en route to Sinbuk-myeon, Yeongam County, to obtain additional fraudulent funds.


A representative of the Sinbuk Police Box stated, "We are making efforts to prevent further damage by sending voice phishing prevention text messages to village heads and broadcasting announcements in the villages. We are also considering awarding a reporting reward to the taxi driver who assisted in the apprehension of the suspect."
