"Could Have Catastrophic Consequences
for Security on the Korean Peninsula and Worldwide"
As Ukraine called for strengthened sanctions against Russia and North Korea, which have officially confirmed the dispatch of troops, it strongly warned that the growing Russia-North Korea alliance would have devastating consequences not only for the Korean Peninsula but also for global security.
According to local media Ukrinform on the 28th (local time), the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement asserting, "Both sides have acknowledged that North Korean troops have joined the war on Russia's side."
The previous day, Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly revealed that North Korean troops had played an active role in the war in Ukraine and expressed his gratitude to North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong Un. North Korea also made the troop dispatch official to its citizens by publishing President Putin's message of thanks on the front page of Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the Workers' Party.
In response, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that the illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea constitutes a serious violation of international law and United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions. The ministry further urged, "The international community must unite to put pressure on Russia and North Korea and take concrete measures to prevent further rapprochement between the two regimes." It added, "The strengthening of the Russia-North Korea alliance could have catastrophic consequences for security on the Korean Peninsula as well as worldwide."
Ukraine cited ballistic missile technology as an example of how military cooperation between Russia and North Korea negatively impacts global security. When Russia first used North Korean ballistic missiles, their accuracy was extremely low, but after real-world testing in Ukraine, their performance improved significantly. Russia's receipt of missiles and other support from North Korea is a violation of UNSC resolutions that ban all arms transactions with North Korea.
Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, previously designated North Korea and Iran as accomplices to Russia's war crimes during a high-level UNSC meeting last year.
