From "Byoldam Garden" to "Azalea Garden": Gwanak's Landmarks Feature Gardens

From "Byoldam Garden" to "Azalea Garden": Gwanak's Landmarks Feature Gardens

Gwanak District (District Mayor Park Junhee) began the renovation of the Bongnimgyo Street Garden (1472-1 Sillim-dong), located in Sinsa-dong, on April 28. The site is set to be transformed into a new urban healing space called "Byoldam Garden."

The Bongnimgyo Street Garden, spanning 980 square meters, is adjacent to Sillim Station Intersection and features access to the Byeolbitnaerincheon walking trail and a bicycle path, making it a popular destination for residents and visitors. In particular, the proximity of the Bicycle Service Center, public restroom, and public parking lot makes it one of the most frequently used spaces by the community.

Through this renovation, the Bongnimgyo Street Garden will be reborn as a distinctive space by adding garden elements to the previously monotonous green area. The newly created Byoldam Garden will feature a variety of themed spaces, including a "Partial Shade Garden" that utilizes shade, a "Rock Garden" that highlights the texture of stones, and a "Forest Garden" that runs along the roadside.

The garden will be planted with a diverse array of vibrant perennials and shrubs, including hydrangea paniculata, daffodils, alliums, astilbe, and Iberis sempervirens. To ensure efficient planting management, the district will adjust the slope of the planting areas and improve plant growth conditions through the use of landscaping stones and ground cover mulching.

To enable residents to enjoy leisure and relaxation in the garden, the space will also be equipped with amenities such as benches with bicycle racks, single-person shelters, illuminated planters for nighttime use, and fitness facilities.

Existing facilities will be relocated to accommodate user movement within the garden, and the exterior of the aging Bicycle Service Center will be redesigned to harmonize with the natural surroundings, thereby enhancing the unity and quality of the space.

The Bicycle Service Center will suspend operations during the street garden renovation period. The repair center will temporarily operate in front of the bicycle storage area next to the Gwanak District Mobile Workers' Shelter, near the street garden.

On April 22, the district established the "Gwanaksan Euddeum Garden" at the entrance to Gwanaksan Park to provide a variety of attractions for visitors to Gwanaksan. In March, the district completed the creation of the "Azalea Garden" in the Nakseongdae area of Gwanaksan Park (San 41-4, Bongcheon-dong) by removing approximately 500 tons of illegally dumped waste accumulated over several years and planting 34,000 azalea shrubs together with residents.

District Mayor Park Junhee stated, "This year, our district is focused on creating a 'healing and garden city where residents are happy,' with an emphasis on spreading a garden culture that residents can enjoy right outside their homes. We will continue to expand green healing spaces where residents worn out by their busy daily lives can relax, and do our utmost to make Gwanak a city where people want to stay and live."
