The opening ceremony, held at the National Health Insurance Ilsan Hospital, was attended by Choi Jonghee, Director of the Chronic Disease Management Bureau at the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency; Ko Junho, Vice Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council; and Jeon Eunkyung, Director of the Student Health Promotion Center at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education.
Gyeonggi Province was selected for the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's public competition for regional atopy and asthma education information centers. In October last year, the province designated the National Health Insurance Ilsan Hospital as the new operator of the atopy and asthma education information center in the northern Gyeonggi region. The Atopy and Asthma Education Information Centers, funded equally by the national and provincial governments, currently number 10 nationwide, including one at Bundang Seoul National University Hospital. With this new opening, the 11th Atopy and Asthma Education Information Center will be operated in the northern region of Gyeonggi Province.
The Gyeonggi Province Northern Atopy and Asthma Education Information Center will be responsible for: providing education for 'Atopy and Asthma Safe Schools'; supporting preventive management education for healthcare professionals and local residents; producing and distributing educational and promotional materials; offering counseling services; and delivering accurate information on related diseases. The center plans to actively promote projects dedicated to the prevention and management of allergic diseases in the northern region by cooperating with local public health centers.
Through the Atopy and Asthma Education Information Center, Gyeonggi Province launched the 'Atopy and Asthma Safe School' program, which provides educational programs and supplies to educational institutions (such as daycare centers, kindergartens, and elementary, middle, and high schools). Starting with 178 schools in 2012, the program has expanded to 824 schools this year, making Gyeonggi Province the region with the largest number of designated and supported Safe Schools nationwide.
Yoo Youngcheol, Director of Health and Wellness, stated, "We expect that the opening of the Atopy and Asthma Education Information Center will greatly contribute to the prevention and management of allergic diseases among residents in the northern region of Gyeonggi Province," adding, "We will continue to promote a variety of initiatives to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be healthy, regardless of their location."
